Today’s Program: Mary Beth Harper on How to Talk with a Grieving Friend
Mary Beth discussed the difficulty many have when trying to support a friend who is mourning the death of a loved one. At times like this, we can often ignore the situation or say the wrong thing. So she suggested two things that are appropriate:
- Say something. Even if you are unsure of what to say, it’s more helpful to acknowledge the suffering of a friend than to ignore it for fear of further upsetting him or her.
- Share a story. Don’t be afraid to tell a story about an experience you had with the deceased. Stories are a great way to make everyone feel good.
Mary Beth then posed two questions to focus discussion around the tables. First, in a time of grief, what was the worst thing anyone said to you. Second, what was the most comforting thing anyone did or said.
Responses to these questions reinforced Mary Beth’s suggestions that acknowledging the situation and sharing good memories can be comforting. It’s important not to make comments that call attention to yourself, such as, “I feel so bad for you,” or “I know exactly how you feel.” It’s also comforting to show up, be present, and bring some food – pies are great at times like this. Finally, make sure to follow up weeks after the calling hours or funeral. Grief can take a long time to recover from and grieving friends may need continuing support.
Mitch Planey provided the response sharing his own experience and thanking Mary Beth for the program.
